Lesson: GOD IS MY DELIVERANCE…From the Belly of the Fish…

Teacher: The Rev. Dr. Evelyn Boyd

Why would someone pray a prayer such as this?

“But I with the voice of thanksgiving will sacrifice to you;
what I have vowed I will pay. Deliverance belongs to the Lord!” Jonah 2:9

Answer: A man who had received divine instruction, failed to obey it, endured the consequences; and wanted a second chance.

So what happened?

Answer: According to the colorful, action-packed Bible story, the man (Jonah) got what he asked for.

Then the Lord spoke to the fish, and it spewed Jonah out upon the dry land.” Jonah 2:10

What does that mean for us in our everyday 21st century life?

Answer: “God as love always gives us a second chance.”

This was the thesis (main point) of a user-friendly Sunday lesson by Dr. Boyd. We can get ourselves into ridiculously awkward situations as a result of hateful thinking, feeling, and action, but the Love-Capacity of the Spirit of God in us will always provide an opportunity for rescue and renewal.

The user-friendly lesson continued with four major thoughts for us, dare we say it, to THINK ABOUT. One of them was:  a “Jonah State of Mind” wwill have us not wanting others to succeed just because we do not like them. The consequences and of such thinking were explored in depth. We were invited, in a cheerful way, to avoid the consequences by applying Principle-based remedies.
